Tomales Bay
Sea kayaking in Inverness
Paddling and boat-in camping all year. Bioluminescence shows only when the sun and moon are both down, so night tours are timed to dark nights. Check the marine forecast before heading north.
Blue Waters Kayaking at Hearts Desire Beach (weekends), 2026; bioluminescence tours from $145
Bioluminescent night paddles and boat-in beach camps.
A long, sheltered arm of the Pacific along the San Andreas Fault, with Point Reyes National Seashore’s beaches on the west side and oyster farms on the east. Paddle by day to empty coves and tule elk country, camp on a beach you can only reach by boat, or join a night tour when the water glows with every stroke. It suits beginners in the south bay and stronger paddlers toward the windy, tidal mouth.
